What Is A Volcano?
A volcano is a geological landform (usually a mountain) where magma/lava erupts through the surface of the planet.
Molten rock, dust, and gases push through the opening in the earth's crust and form a mountain
There are four types of volcanoes: active, intermittent, dormant, and extinct. Volcanoes can occur on land ,or like Surtsey, in the water.

Volcanoes occur along the earth's tectonic plates where the molten rock, from magma chambers deep underground, is forced upward. The magma may be fifty to one hundred miles underground. As the magma rises, it gives off gases that may cause an explosion in the vents of the volcano. Lava (Magma) can reach temperatures of over 2000 degrees F (2000 degrees Fahrenheit = 1 093.33333 degrees Celsius). A violent explosion can cause the top of the volcano to blow off leaving a deep crater in the earth.
